How Eating Disorders Affect Your Relationship

Swirling rumors about celebrity eating disorders have been sweeping the nation for decades. Sadly, many women follow that same path in hopes to look like their famous role models. Unfortunately, what they may not know, is that it could have devastating and sometimes irreversible effects.

So listen up all of you out there who are barfing up your dinners in hopes of getting into a size 2. It’s not flattering. Your body is a temple, treat it like one. It’s the only one you’ve got. Anorexia, bulimia and binge eating are also mental disorders. You get out of tune with the world because you’re so obsessed with the way your body looks, that you overlook every day life. Sometimes even your partner. Read below to see some of the damaging outcomes of trying to be too thin.

HEART PROBLEMS: Anorexia literally starves your heart, making it weaker. Dehydration from vomiting may cause electrolyte imbalances that can lead to cardiac arrest. Most of this damage is reversible once you reach a healthy weight, but that is NO reason to test the waters. I don’t think your husband wants to plan a funeral for his 35 year old bride.

MEDICATION OVERDOSE: If you are severely underweight, it is more likely that you will have an accidental overdose because typical doses are based on people of normal height and weight.

INFERTILITY: For those of you who don’t want children, this is still a health issue. Not having enough body fat can put a stop to ovulation and having too much can throw your hormones out of whack. If you’re with someone who wants to start a family, this isn’t good news. For some women, however, fertility returns once you get healthy and you don’t suffer from long term problems.

TOOTH LOSS: Frequent vomiting causes cavities and tooth loss, as stomach acid erodes your enamel. How attractive would that be to have dentures when you’re 30? How do you explain that one to your boyfriend? “Umm.. honey- can you drive me to the dentist so I can get false teeth because I really, really want to be skinny!” Pathetic.

BLOATING:  Ironically, eating disorders can make your stomach look worse. They result in digestive problems, heartburn and constipation- many of which lead to abdominal swelling. Not the result you were looking for.

Society applauds skinny bodies, but there shouldn’t be such a fine line as to looking fabulous and being severely ill. And I don’t know about you, but I don’t think my guy would like holding back my hair while watching dinner float in the toilet. There is nothing attractive about eating disorders or the results they produce. It not only affects you, but the people that surround you.

If you or anyone you know has a disorder, you need to get help. This is a serious and growing problem among women. If you need to, reach out to their parents or partner. Your compassion could save a life.
